Arizona offers a diverse array of zoos that cater to wildlife enthusiasts, families, and conservation supporters alike. Here are five standout zoos across the state that provide unique and enriching experiences:

1. Phoenix Zoo (Phoenix)

Located in the heart of Papago Park, the Phoenix Zoo spans 125 acres and houses over 3,000 animals. As Arizona’s largest non-profit zoo, it features four main trails: the Arizona Trail, Africa Trail, Tropics Trail, and Children’s Trail. Visitors can enjoy interactive experiences like Stingray Bay, camel rides, and the Safari Train. Seasonal events such as ZooLights and the annual “Snow Day”—where 10 tons of ice create a winter wonderland—offer additional attractions.

Located just west of Phoenix, this expansive facility boasts Arizona’s largest collection of exotic and endangered animals, with over 600 species. The park includes a safari train, aquarium, and interactive exhibits like giraffe feeding. Despite a recent avian flu outbreak that affected some animals, the zoo has implemented enhanced safety measures to protect both visitors and wildlife.

4. Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary (Prescott)

This non-profit sanctuary focuses on the conservation and protection of native and exotic animals. Home to over 150 rescued animals, including clouded leopards and Canadian lynx, the sanctuary offers educational programs and events throughout the year. Its scenic location in Prescott provides a tranquil setting for visitors.

5. Navajo Nation Zoo & Botanical Park (Window Rock)

As the only tribally-owned zoo in the U.S., this facility offers a unique perspective on wildlife conservation. Featuring over 50 species native to the Navajo Nation, the zoo emphasizes the cultural significance of each animal. Admission is free, making it an accessible educational resource for all visitors.
