Arizona’s First Peoples: Discover the Heart of the Grand Canyon State
Updated: Aug 19

Long before Arizona became the 48th state, it was home to vibrant Tribal Nations whose cultures, traditions, and deep connection to the land have shaped this remarkable place for thousands of years. Today, 22 federally recognized Tribal Nations continue to call Arizona home, each with its own language, history, art, cuisine, and traditions.
From the iconic red mesas of the Navajo Nation and the ancient villages of the Hopi Tribe, to the soaring canyon landscapes of the Hualapai andHavasupai, the pine forests of the White Mountain Apache, the Sonoran Desert homeland of the Tohono O’odham, and the thriving communities of central Arizona including the Salt River Pima-Maricopa and Gila River Indian Community, every Nation offers a unique window into Arizona’s rich cultural heritage.
These aren’t simply places to visit—they are living communities where traditions are celebrated, artists create extraordinary work, guides share stories passed down through generations, and local businesses warmly welcome visitors. Exploring Arizona through its Tribal Nations offers a deeper understanding of the landscapes, history, and cultures that make this state unlike anywhere else in the world.
We’ve gathered links to each Nation’s official tourism, cultural, or visitor website to help you begin your journey. We encourage you to explore respectfully, support Native-owned businesses whenever possible, and discover Arizona through the eyes of the people who have known and cared for this land since time immemorial.
Welcome to Arizona’s Tribal Nations where there is so much to learn, so much to experience, and so much to love.
